Warning: Don't Be Late To Salome
Salome is 100 minutes of action-packed opera with no overture, no intermission, and no late seating! The show starts at 7:30pm and once we close the doors, there is no late seating and no break to put you into the house!
Show Up Late, And You'll Get This...
Show Up Late, And You'll Get This...
Top Twenty Opera Divas

Our friend D. Feldman forwarded this to us over the weekend:
The 20 best classical divas by the Times Online
It's kind of a fun parlor piece, and they came up with an interesting criteria:
Voice, Visuals, Roles, Back story, Celeb factor
We're proud to see at least one Canadian on the list, Measha Bruggergosman:
How many opera singers look like disco divas? This wonderfully sassy Canadian soprano is a real one-off, so let’s hope she makes the most of it in the years to come. She could start by getting seen further afield than North America, and dipping more of a toe into opera than she’s hitherto managed.
Now this is the kind of game we all like to play, so have at it...

Jack Pine Field Notes

Follow Jack Pine on tour with Field Notes, an occassional online journal by Michael MacKinnon, The Botanist in our production.
Touring through 2009 & 2010, Jack Pine tells the story of short, twisted and misunderstood Jack, as he finds his place among the trees.
Jack Pine is a wonderful celebration of a tenacious tree. Found throughout Canada east of the Rockies, as well as in New England and the Great Lakes states, Jack Pine is a "nurse tree," sheltering the seedlings of other trees. Short and twisted, it has seldom been logged, and because it grows so well in bad soil, farmers in past centuries sometimes thought it had poisoned their land.
In a poem as knotty and beautiful as the tree itself, Veda Hille and Christopher Patton tell the story of one Jack Pine, and conveys the splendor of the pine forests that once covered much of eastern North America.
Adam Fisher, Rose-Ellen Nichols, Michael MacKinnon, Hiather Darnel-Kadonaga, pianist Andrea Wood and Stage Manager, Rebecca Craster will tour to more than 55 elementary schools and a several community theatres, performing for over 20,000 young people in the next 3 months.
The official premiere was on Feb 15 at Centennial Hall in North Van, and we are just now catching up with the team as they tour Vancouver Island...
Week 4:
On the Island: It sure is sweet to get out of the city. This is the life. We are in great landscapes, with spectacular scenery and even great weather. What happened! To hit the Pacific is always inspiring, so our show and time in Ucluelet was particularly special.
We got to go sea kayaking early on our big drive day too.
We got so lucky. And never has the value and import in the message of this show resonated so strongly; ‘The air is fresher here, because the trees are breathing.’ In the national parks of the coast or at Cathedral Grove, that is abundantly clear. We will split up this weekend, some heading home and some staying on island. But it’s a two-show day in Victoria on Monday.Week 5:
Victoria snow day craziness!!! It was very sketchy driving to the first show. We experienced quite bizarre weather patterns, and a very cold gym hall this morning. Especially after the last week of perfect spring-like conditions, it was a wake-up call. But the hearty grub of the My-Chosen Café perked me back up at lunch hour and by that time the snow has entirely stopped and mostly melted, although there will still be a dusting of it over the city as I watch the sunset from Mount Doug that evening.
Gabriola Island, as with all the Gulf Islands, is a magical spot at any time, and our day and night there was a spectacular gift.
Great comfy cabins and a full moon shining down on snowy fields and calm waters. We all ate a delicious evening meal together and looked at the pictures from a school we have just received. They are fantastic. The artwork is hilarious, vibrant and imaginative. Later, Adam and I finally cracked out a few raucous banjo/guitar jams. Most gratifying.
The Island(s) tour ends on a high with two shows at Artspring on Salt Spring, when we have an evening show open to the public (only our second show in a proper theatre space, after the premiere. I find it does change the dynamic of the show somewhat.) and then a packed show for schoolkids the following morning.
Author of the book, Christopher Patton, has come up from Salt Lake City to be here and it was great to meet him. He describes himself not as a children’s author but as a poet who happened to write a book for children. That makes a lot of sense, reading it again. It was very cool to get his insight on where the story came from, and his inspiration, older books and folk tales alike. He seems genuinely delighted by the show, which is very good news.
So there we are. Just a few wee words.
cheers,
Michael

Salome: What's It About?

Salome (SAL-oh-may)
A synopsis of a synopsis
Herod has killed his brother, married his wife, and is obsessed with his new stepdaughter Salome. Plus, he’s got John the Baptist locked up in the basement for cursing his depravity. So, he's throwing a party and oogling Salome.
Salome is creeped out by Herod, and discovers John in the basement. She hits on John, who rejects her, offering instead her salvation.
John is heard by the party guests who start arguing about God. Herod just keeps hitting on Salome. She refuses to dance for him until she gets him to swear to give her anything she wants in return.
Salome dances, seductively removing her clothes. Herod, pleased, asks what reward she would like. Salome coldly asks for the head of the prophet on a silver platter. Herod, horrified, offers jewels, peacocks, half his kingdom, even the sacred veil of the Temple of the Jews, but Salome is firm and reminds Herod he has sworn an oath.
Herod finally gives in and the executioner descends into the cistern, reappearing with the prophet’s head. Salome speaks to the severed head as to a lost lover, asking why he wouldn’t accept her love, sure that if he had truly looked at her, he would have loved her. Salome kisses the head of John passionately and knows that the bitter taste of death is the same as the taste of love. Herod, terrified and disgusted, orders his soldiers to kill her.
Lights out for Salome.
read the full synopsis here
The piece was considered so shocking that it was banned in London until 1908 banned in Vienna until 1918, and was almost banned at the Met in New York, where it was forced to close after one performance by the shocked patrons.
Salome is one of the prime examples of Succès de scandale, French for "success by scandal".
Come see why....

Rigoletto: Closure
Some thoughts on Rigoletto as we close tonight:
1. Awesome audiences make the show better every night. They totally make our job worthwhile. If you loved it, you shouted it out -- and lots of you shouted LOUD. Thank you! Closing night audience - special thanks to you for losing your minds at curtain call for all of our cast! A great way to close a great run!
2. Opera newbies welcome! We talked to tons of people who came for their first opera and loved it! Come early for the pre-show @ 6:30, ask us questions. We love to make you "one of us...one of us...".
3. Thanks for VANOC for being a great production sponsor and letting us be part of the Cultural Olympiad! That was cool. Looking forward to next year.
4. Special thanks to everybody that joined us for the closing night "Fan Appreciation Night" on the 17th!! Great to have you down to the opera! Let us know what you thought! What do you say we do it again for Salome?
PS: Check us out on Flickr - we've uploaded tons of photos.
PS2: Check us out on YouTube - we've got lots of uploads there too!
PS3: Check us out on Twitter - yes we are there too...
Thanks to the entire cast and crew for a beautiful production. BRAVI.
Now on to Salome.
Carmen was a little nuts. Rigoletto was doomed, but Salome?
Salome is just twisted...

Rigoletto: "Maestro Dala is note-perfect"

The Vancouver Opera Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Leslie Dala is note-perfect and especially compelling in their interpretation of the harrowing thunderstorm in the final act.
"Donnie Ray Albert is masterful"
"Eglise Gutierrez, in her Vancouver Opera debut, gives an impassioned performance...for which she received, deserved instant and sustained applause."
"Tenor Bruce Sledge's...cavalier vocals on his signature aria, La donna è mobile...are delivered with gusto."
"Kirk Eichelberger as a sinister Sparafucile and gorgeous mezzo-soprano, Norine Burgess as his bewitching sister and accomplice Maddalena, are stylishly effective."

Rigoletto: "Thrilling Evening"

Vancouver Observer made a night of it, with dinner, drinks and Rigoletto
"Tragically operatic and beautifully portrayed by a league of actors and singers, including Rigoletto himself, Baritone Donnie Ray Albert and newcomer to the Vancouver Opera, Eglise Gutierrez, who is Gilda, Rigoletto’s only family. Bruce Sledge makes a fantastically acerbic and amusing Duke of Mantua, while Kirk Eichelberger as the murderous Sparafucile and his equally desperate sister, Maddalena, played by Norine Burgess, do a perfect job in convincing us that they would do anything to get what they wanted."

Rigoletto: Risque and Entertaining says Beyond Robson
"Gutierrez's soprano gracefully sends shivers down your spine—making you feeling the need to breath for her as she holds those incredible notes. All in all, the haunting notes and vivid imagery of the storm scene stands out as a personal favorite."

Rigoletto: "One cage match worth catching"

Donnie Ray Albert "Nails It"
"Donnie Ray Albert’s hunchbacked Rigoletto nails the man’s bitter mean-spiritedness, while bringing a rarely seen believability to his fatherly love."
Eglise Gutierrez "The Real Deal"
"Rising star Eglise Gutierrez is the full package, with the acting depth to make Gilda more than a gullible girl, and she has the voice of an angel..."

Blogger Night At The Opera: Rigoletto

As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we’ll be doing the second Blogger Night @ The Opera this Saturday (Mar. 7). Five prominent local bloggers have been invited to bring their laptops down to the QET and blog from the lobby before the show and during intermission (and the afterparty if they have the stamina).
Some of these bloggers have been with us before while others are complete newbies. We’ve asked them to share their thoughts on the entire experience, from hobnobbing with other opera patrons at the bar, to seeing the gorgeous costumes and sets, to hearing all those famous tunes performed live.
These bloggers all have very strong readership, so we hope this event will help people learn a bit about what VO does. And hopefully, those people will come to the opera themselves next time!
Starting about 7:00pm here on this site and simultaneously on their home sites, you'll be able to read the posts as they happen.
Here are the blogs:

TRAFFIC AND PARKING ALERT FOR RIGOLETTO

Rigoletto Dress a Roaring Success
These are some of the comments from attendees of last night's dress rehearsal for Rigoletto, opening tomorrow, March 7.
A crowd of just under 1,000 students, friends and invited attendees got a sneak peak at our new cutting edge production under the direction of Maestro Les Dala and Director Glynis Leyshon.
"(Donnie Ray Albert) was born to do Rigoletto" said one patron "Have you ever seen a more tortured soul on stage?"
And it was said of soprano Eglise Gutierrez, "I haven't heard that kind of coloratura in forty years! That voice is like crystal...we are going to be talking about her for years."
This is Eglise's premiere with Vancouver Opera. After this she is off to Seattle, Montreal and to The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden to reprise her role as Gilda.
We think you'll be pleased to say you saw her here first.
